Copper Alloy Powders
Case study
MPP metal powder developed a gas atomised copper alloy powder in collaboration with its customer.
The chemistry was optimised and the particles produced were highly dense in nature with limited porosity and highly spherical. The powders are ideally suited for AM downstream processing.
Application
Sawing cords are used for cutting hard and brittle materials. The sawing bead comprises a tubular metallic sleeve on which an abrasive layer is deposited. The abrasive layer comprises a metal matrix material in which abrasive particles are held.
One method for producing abrasive layers is currently making its inroads into the world of saw blades for cutting stone namely laser cladding. In laser cladding a stream of powder (MPP Copper alloy) is fed into a high-intensity beam of a laser that is focused on the surface of the substrate by means of a carrier gas stream. The powder is a mixture of metal powder and abrasive particles (usually diamond). The powder melts and forms a pool of molten metal that solidifies and fixes the abrasive particles.
