MCrAlY alloys
MCrAlY spray powders are composed of nickel (Ni) or Cobalt (Co) or can be a combination of both. They serve as the foundation for gas turbine hot section thermal spray coatings.
MPP creates them using vacuum induction melting/argon gas atomisation (VIM/AGA) technology. This results in high-purity, low-oxide powders. This assures consistent and homogeneous chemistry of the powder particles. Our freely flowing powders feed exceptionally well when thermal spraying. These powders offer coatings with superior high temperature oxidation and corrosion resistant.
The protective effect of these alloys is due to the formation of a continuous thermally stable oxide layer on the coating surface.
The choice of base material (Co or Ni) is dependent on the primary corrosion mechanism, but as engine temperatures increase, the trend is towards CoNiCrAlY compositions. Cr and Al are present in the MCrAlY composition because they form highly tenacious protective oxide scales, whilst Y promotes formation of these stable oxides.
- NiCrAlY materials protect against oxidation in high temperature gas environments
- CoCrAlY chemistries offer excellent resistance to hot corrosion (sulphidation)
- NiCoCrAlY or CoNiCrAlY materials provide an acceptable balance of both oxidation and sulphidation resistance
MCrAlY materials can be supplied with different particle size distributions, designed for suitability using different thermal spray processes including:
- Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD)
- Low Pressure (LPPS), Vacuum Plasma (VPS) or Air Plasma Spraying (APS)
- High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) spraying
